Collie Trivia

The original "Lassie" was tri colored, not sable.

Collies come in two coats: rough and smooth.  There can be both rough and smooth collies in the same litter.

The smooth was not bred for warmer climate but for areas with a lot of low brush and brambles.

Collies generally weigh 6.8-12 oz. at birth and will grow to 11-14 lbs by the time they are 8 weeks of age.

Collies come in 4 basic colors: sable, tri (black with tan and white markings and a brown dot over each eye), blue, and white (which will have a sable, tri, or blue head).

The Collie Club of America, one of the oldest breed clubs, was formed in 1886, just two years after the American Kennel Club.

There are many theories about the origin of the name Collie. The most popular are:

The original Collies were all black and the Anglo-Saxon word for black is Coll so these were Collie dogs.
